Procedure for Handling
Nuisance/Obscene/Threatening Telephone Calls

Making nuisance, obscene, or threatening telephone calls is a violation of state and federal laws. If you receive such a call, follow these steps:

1. Report it immediately to the SIUC Department of Public Safety at 618-453-3771. They will assign a "case number." You will need this case number and the name of the officer you spoke with before proceeding to the next step.

2. Contact the Verizon Unlawfull Call Center at 800-257-2969. They will investigate and report any findings directly to the SIU Department of Public Safety. The Call Bureau will ask you for the following information:

a. The name, telephone number, and fax number of the law enforcement agency you contacted:

(1) SIUC Department of Public Safety

(2) 618-453-3771 (telephone)

(3) 618-453-4567 (fax)

b. The name of the law enforcement officer.

c. The "case number" assigned.
