What is a Network ID?

A "Network ID" is the generic name being used to identify the id that will be needed to access applications being protected by the SIUC security service. (Additional information on the security service is available in CWIS under Computing on Campus - submenu SIUC Security Services.) The Network ID can physically be the same as the ids currently being used to access other SIUC computing resources, such as CMS, MVS/CICS, or "POP" mail.

Network IDs have a minimum length requirement of four characters with a maximum of eight. The Network ID does not require the first character to be alphabetic like the current VM/CMS and MVS/CICS systems do, but should the user desire to use the same id on all systems, this should be kept in mind. As with the current systems, ids should not be of an offensive nature.

Network IDs can be obtained by any current faculty, staff, or student. Requesting a Network ID does not require the completion of any paperwork or securing of authorized signatures. Only one Network ID can be requested by each user through the on-line process. Additional ids can be obtained, however, by sending an e-mail note to SIU80 outlining the need for this additional id.

Two "on-line" avenues exist for requesting an id. One avenue for obtaining a Network ID is through the use of CWIS; the other is through the dial-in server. In CWIS, go to the Request a Network ID option under Computing on Campus - submenu SIUC Security Services. This option connects to a second application, login to this application using the id guest and select the Request Network ID menu item. From the dial-in server, login using the id guest and select the Request Network ID menu item.

An individual requesting a Network ID can also get a "POP" mail account at the same time by answering appropriately to the "Do you also wish to have a 'POP' mail account" question. If a "POP" mail id is requested, the initial passwords for both accounts will be the same. The current network and "POP" mail password databases will initially be separate files with separate password maintenance procedures. This separation is only temporary and the ability to combine them will be available in the next release of the network software.

Network IDs and the associated "POP" mail id will be available for use by the individual who requested it as long as that individual remains employed by or is attending SIUC. Once this association no longer exists the network and associated "POP" mail ids will have their access privileges removed. The checks for employment or attendance will be conducted twice each year; at the beginning of each fall and spring semesters.

Additional information on "POP" mail ids can be found in CWIS under Computing on Campus - submenu SIUC E-Mail Services.
