Configuring SIU Directory Services in Netscape Communicator v.4.5 for Windows 95/98/NT

SIU Directory Services is a new service offered to the campus community by Information Technology.  The SIU Directory Services allows you to search a common database of all faculty, staff, and student e-mail addresses.  The various departments around campus have listed the preferred e-mail contact address for their faculty and staff.  These addresses, along with other pertinent information, have been entered into a directory allowing you to search for the e-mail address directly from your e-mail client without using the e-mail search function on the campus web site.

Minimum Requirements for SIU Directory Services

  • Campus Area Network Access either through modem or direct connection.
  • Netscape Communicator configured correctly for you e-mail account.

Steps to configure Netscape Communicator 4.5 for SIU Directory Services

Step 1
Start Netscape Communicator by clicking on the desktop icon.

Click Communicator. Click Address Book.

Your address book window will open in the middle of the screen. Click File.  Click New Directory.

The Directory Server Property window will open.  In the Description box, type SIU Directory Service.  In the LDAP Server box, type siu-ds.siu.edu.   In the Search Root box, type o=SIU, c=US (lowercase o equals uppercase SIU comma space lowercase c equals uppercase US).  Make sure the Port Number is 389, and Don't show more than 100 results.  Click OK.

Steps for using SIU Directory Services to find an e-mail address

Step 1
The Address Book window should still be open.  If it is not open, click Communicator, then click Address book to open it.  In the Address book window, find and click the SIU Directory Services listing in the left part of the window.  Next, you can search for the email address of anyone that is either faculty, student, or staff when you know the name of the person. Click the Search For button in the right of the screen beneath the Netscape logo.

Step 2
A Basic Search window will open where you can search for information on a people based on any of the data you enter in the boxes.  If you know a person's name, and you want to know his/her e-mail address, you can search based on the name.  You can also search on any one or more of the other entries in the window and clicking the search button.

The results will be displayed in the right window of the Address Book window.  You can send a message to a person found in the search by clicking once on the person's entry and then clicking the New Msg button at the top of the window.

You are now ready to use SIU Directory Service to find the e-mail address of any Faculty, Student, or Staff member at Southern Illinois University.
