Note: McAfee Enterprise is available for download through a site license agreement to current students, staff, and faculty members of SIUC only.
Installing McAfee 8.5
Step 1 – Download the McAfee antivirus installation file, VSE850LML.exe from the SIU file server. Save it to your local hard disk drive by right-clicking the file and selecting "Save as" or "Save target as", preferably on the "Desktop" where it will be easy to find.
Step 2 - Double-click the VSE850LML icon. The "WinZip Self-Extractor" will begin to start the install process. Click the 'Setup' button to initiate the installation.
Step 3 - The "FEAD Optimizer" program will appear briefly. Wait for it to finish. No action is required.
Step 4 - At the "McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Setup" screen, click the 'Next' button.
Step 5 - On the next page, "Network Associates Licensing," select 'Perpetual' under "License Expiry Type" in the upper left, and then click on the dot beside "I accept the terms in the license agreement" near the bottom left. Click 'OK' to continue.
Step 6 - If a "Previous Version Detected" screen appears, a version of McAfee antivirus software other than 8.5 was found already installed on your computer. At this point, there are two options. You can continue the installation and replace the previous version of McAfee antivirus, or stop the installation, remove the previous version, and re-start the version 8.5 install. The Customer Service Center recommends uninstalling the older version prior to installing version 8.5.
If you decide to uninstall the older version of McAfee, do so using the "Add or Remove Programs" control panel option which is available on the "Start" menu under "Control Panels" (or sometimes it is found under "Settings" and then "Control Panels", depending upon the exact configuration of your specific Microsoft Windows installation). Once the McAfee antivirus software is uninstalled, re-start your computer using the "Start," "Shut Down," and "Restart" menu options. After the computer is re-started, begin the installation again starting at Step 2.
If you elect to simply continue the installation and allow the McAfee 8.5 installer to attempt to replace the current McAfee installation, do NOT select the "Preserve Settings" option on the "Previous Version Detected" screen, and click 'Next.'
Step 7 - If you did not see a "Previous Version Detected" screen, or if you continued without uninstalling an older version of McAfee, the next screen that is presented to you will be "Select Setup Type." The default selection, "Typical," is the correct option, simply choose 'Next' to continue the installation.
Step 8 - A "Select Access Protection Level " screen will appear; click 'Next.' Note that it is recommended for the typical user to keep the "Standard Protection" selected, selecting "Maximum Protection" will cause issues with installing legitimate software and might seem as an annoyance to the typical user.
Step 9 - A "Ready to Install" screen will appear; click 'Install.'

Step 10 - Wait for the installation to complete. Depending upon the speed of your computer processor, the installation may take several minutes.
Step 11 - Once completed, a message stating that the "Setup has completed successfully" will be presented. There are two options on this page. If you are already connected to the internet (via ethernet, dial-up, DSL, cable modem, wireless, et cetera) select "Update Now" and unselect "Run On-Demand Scan" on this screen. If you are not presently connected to the internet de-select both "Update Now" and "Run On-Demand Scan" before clicking "Finish."
Step 12 - If you were connected to the internet and chose to run the "Update Now" option, you will see an "Update in Progress" screen. Allow the update to finish, and then click the 'Close' button.
Step 13 - You might be shown a notice screen at this point stating that the "network driver is installed" and various other items are ready to use, but that they will not be active until after the computer is re-started. Click 'OK' to close this notice window.
Step 14 - Re-start your computer using the "Start," "Shut Down," and "Restart" menu choices.
Step 15 - At your earliest possible convenience, connect your computer to the internet and update the antivirus program. To do this, use the right mouse button and click on the McAfee VirusScan shield icon in the lower right corner of your screen, near the clock display. On the menu that will pop up, choose, "Update Now" and allow the update process to finish.

The Customer Service Center recommends that you update your McAfee antivirus program at least once per week. (Running the update more often than once per week will do no harm to your computer, and will cost you only the time spent running the update process.)
VirusAlert-L Mailing List
With the increasing demand from the Campus Community for information and combined with Information Technology's mission to provide good customer service, we have created a mailing list named VIRUSALERT-L.This list is the official mail list to receive notification concerning recent viruses and information concerning updates to the McAfee VirusScan. The purpose of this list is to provide a quick and uniform means to notify the user community at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine at Springfield.
Because the number of viruses on the Internet increases as each day goes by, and because of the complexity of some of these viruses, Network Associates may make available an update file between the normal monthly updates. If this file is made available, it will be placed in the appropriate directory on the SIUC Public FTP server allowing users to use the update function in their VirusScan software. If you have your VirusScan updates scheduled for once a month, you will not receive these updates until the next time your VirusScan software automatically updates itself. To protect your computer from these new viruses, you can manually run the update function when these files are made available, provided you are aware that the files are available. A notification of this event occurring will be sent out to all subscribers of the VirusAlert-L mailing list. For this reason, it is in your best interest to subscribe to this mailing list.
To subscribe to this list, simply send an email message to listserv@siu.edu. Do not place any text in the subject field, and only place the following in the body of the message:
SUB VIRUSALERT-L FirstName LastName
(Replace FirstName with your real first name, and LastName with your real last name). You will receive a message asking for your confirmation for signing up for the list. Follow the directions in this message and reply to it to confirm your subscription. You will then begin receiving notices regarding updates and virus activity from the mailing list manager.
