ShredIt for Macintosh General Instructions
Once you have obtained the ShredIt program from the Computer Support Center (CSC), using it to wipe Macintosh hard disk drives is very simple. All that is required is to start the computer with the ShredIt disk, or with your original Apple Operating System CD-ROM. (If you start from the hard disk, the operating system will not let you wipe the drive. The operating system files on the drive will be in use, and they cannot be both in use and being wiped at the same time.)
If you start using an Apple OS disk, eject it after it has finished booting, and insert the ShredIt CD. (If you have problems ejecting the Apple OS CD, contact the CSC for assistance.) If you are using the OS 7 version floppy diskette, insert it (you can leave the Apple CD in the CD drive). Locate the ShredIt application program file on the CD or floppy diskette and double-click it. On the menu that appears, select the "Mireth Standard" write pattern (it is the default - just leave it that way). Change the number of writes to "10" to meet the requirements for the SIUC policy. The method will be "DoD Sanitize." Enter the registration code provided with the disk to unlock the program, and click the button to proceed.
Select the hard disk from the display of system devices. Follow any prompts that appear to confirm that you wish to wipe this drive. Click the start function button. The wipe is in progress within a few seconds; the process will take a very long time, depending upon the speed of the hardware you are using and the size of the disk you are wiping. Wait for the prompt to return and the indicators to show that the wipe has fiwnished. Fill out the destruction certification form and affix it to the computer.
