HOW DOES A SITE LICENSE WORK?
Q: What is a "seat"?
A: A "seat" is a single installation
of the software. Even if the software agreement permits an additional
installation at home, you still must record 2 seats on the software
waiver form.
Q: On how many computers may I install this software?
A: We need an accurate count of installed seats
to satisfy the conditions of most of our site-licensed software agreements.
When you request authorization to receive the software from Sue Spears,
please tell her how many seats you need. If you require additional seats
of the same version, please send another email request to Sue Spears. You'll
be sent another software waiver form because we must have an updated
copy on file.

Q: If we have a site license, why do we have to count
the number of seats?
A: Most site licenses are priced based on the number
of seats. If we cannot prove that we use reliable methods to determine
accurate seat counts, vendors are likely to include an additional charge
to cover their estimate of our uncounted installations.

WHO MAY HAVE SITE-LICENSED SOFTWARE?
Q: I work as a graduate assistant, so do I qualify
as "staff"?
A: No. In order to qualify for a graduate assistantship,
a person must be a student. Even though graduate assistants are employed
by SIUC, they are students, first and foremost. This issue has been
escalated to the SIUC Legal Department and their decision is final.

Q: How can I get this software for my graduate assistant?
A: Some site-licensed software may be installed
on an SIUC-owned desktop computer that may be used by your graduate
assistant. A faculty or staff person must request the software and be
held responsible for it. For more details, please contact Sue Spears
via email at sspears at siu.edu.

Q: I'm a student, how can I get this software?
A: SAS, SPSS, Mathematica, and several Adobe products
may be used on computers in the Computer Learning Centers (CLC). To
find a CLC with the software you need, visit http://infotech.siu.edu/clc/index.html
Students can purchase a lease for SAS. Click on "Software"
in the left menu bar and then select "SAS Institute".
Students can purchase SPSS at discounted prices here: http://www.spss.com/vertical_markets/education/online.htm
McAfee is the only site-licensed software that is available from
SIUC for students to install on student-owned computers.

HOW DO I USE MY DOWNLOAD LINK TO GET THE
SITE-LICENSED SOFTWARE?
Q: I opened my download link -- what are all these
files and which ones do I need?
A: Please see the picture below for a sample of
what you see when you click on a download link.
The "readme" files contain instructions for using the free
CD/DVD burning programs also listed.
The files "cdburn" and "dvdburn" are free utilities
for burning CDs and DVDs, respectively.
The first ".iso" file is the installation CD for SPSS.
The second ".iso" file is the CD containing manuals for SPSS.

Q: What is an ".iso" file?
A: An ".iso" file is an image of the
entire contents of a CD or DVD. It is similar to a ".zip"
file. The only way to "unzip" an ".iso" file is
to burn it to a CD or DVD.
Q: How do I turn an ".iso" file into a CD
or DVD?
A: The only way to "unzip" an ".iso"
file is to burn it to a CD or DVD using a CD/DVD burning program's "Burn
Image to Disk" option. If you burn the ".iso" file correctly,
the resulting CD or DVD should contain multiple folders and files including
the file that automatically launches the installation program. If you
burn the ".iso" file incorrectly, you'll see a single ".iso"
file on the CD or DVD.

Q: What software/hardware do I need to burn a CD or
DVD?
A: You need a piece of software to burn a CD or
DVD. Typical software brands are Roxio and Sonic. Free programs called
cdburn.exe and dvdburn.exe are provided with every software download
link.
You need media, either a CD or a DVD. If a DVD is required, the
letters "DVD" are appended to the end of the ".iso"
filename. If a dual layer DVD is required, the letters "DVD DL"
are appended to the end of the ".iso" filename.
You need a CD drive or DVD drive that can burn media. This is how
to determine what kind of hardware you have:
In Windows XP, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Hardware,
Device Manager, DVD/CD-ROM Drives.

In Windows Vista, go to Start, Control Panel, System and Maintenance,
Device Manager, View hardware and devices, DVD/CD-ROM drives.

In the above pictures, these computers have a DVD burner that can handle
CDs or DVDs of type -R, +R, -RW, or +RW.

Q: What kind of CD or DVD do I need?
A: Look at the ".iso" filename. If a DVD is required,
the letters "DVD" are appended to the end of the ".iso"
filename. If a dual layer DVD is required, the letters "DVD DL"
are appended to the end of the ".iso" filename. If you don't
see "DVD" or "DVD DL" at the end of the filename,
a CD is sufficient.
CDs and DVDs come in the following types: -R, +R, -RW, +RW. DVDs
also come in dual layer (DL) format for very large files.
Since you won't be writing additional data to your installation
media, you don't need RW. The -R format has been in existence longer
than the +R format, so more drives are compatible with it. For these
reasons, we recommend the CD-R or DVD-R formats.

HOW DO I USE MY CD/DVD BURNING SOFTWARE?
Q: How do I use Roxio Creator Plus - Dell Edition to
burn images to disk?
A: Open Roxio by going to Start, Programs, Roxio,
Creator Projects, RecordNow Copy.

Choose the "Burn Image to Disk" option.

Use the Browse button to find the image file you wish to burn. Insert
the appropriate media into the drive and press the red button in the
lower right-hand corner.

The disk will take some minutes to burn. When it is finished, the disk
will be ejected from the drive. Close the drive. Close Roxio. Explore
the drive to find the executable file that begins the installation.

Q: How do I use Sonic RecordNow to burn images to disk?
A: Some versions of Sonic RecordNow require you
to pay for an upgrade before you can burn images to disk. Look under
the "Backup" tab. If you see "Upgrade - Save and Burn
Disk Images", then your version of Sonic RecordNow will not burn
an image to disk unless you pay to upgrade the software.
