Configuring TCP/IP for Mac

This document explains how to set up an Ethernet card to connect to the SIUC Campus Area Network (CAN). It was written specifically for students living in residence hall rooms that have been wired for this type of connection, such as those at Thompson Point.

Hardware Requirements
  • A computer. This document was written for Macintosh operating systems.
  • A 10baseT Ethernet card
  • A 15-25 foot, category 5 cable with RJ45 connectors
Software Requirements
  • Mac OS(This documentation was written based on OS 7.5.3)
  • Open Transport 1.1.2 or newer

Step 1
Make sure the Ethernet card is properly installed on your computer and that the category 5 cable is plugged into the Ethernet card and into the B-jack on the wall.

Step 2
Point the cursor to the Apple icon on the top left corner of your screen, hold the mouse button down and select Control panels.  From the Control panels, select TCP/IP and use the following configurations:

    • Connect via - Select Ethernet
    • Configure - Select Using DHCP Server
    • IP Address - Will be supplied by server
    • Subnet mask - Do not enter anything
    • Router address - Do not enter anything
    • Name server addr - Do not enter anything
    • Use 802.3 - Don't have to be checked
    • Select Hosts Files - Don't have to do anything
    • Implicit Search Path/Starting domain name - leave blank
    • Ending domain name - leave blank
    • Additional Search domains - leave blank
    • Click on the Options button, make TCP/IP Active, check Load only when needed, and click on the OK button.
    • Close the TCP/IP windows and you'll be promted to save the configuration.  Make sure you save it.......

OR

Point the cursor to the Apple icon on the top left corner of your screen, hold the mouse button down and select Control panels.  From the Control panels, select TCP/IP.

  • Once the TCP/IP window appears on the sceen, click on "Edit" on the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  • From the "Edit" menu, select "User mode".
  • Make sure you have the following setup:
    • Basic is checked
    • Connect via - Ethernet
    • IP Address - Will be supplied by server
    • Search domain - siu.edu

Step 3
Shut down and restart your computer.
