Remediation

The first time you connect your ethernet cable to the jack in your residence hall room, you will begin the process of installing the Clean Access Agent and signing up to use the RezNet.

The Clean Access Agent (the original program name was "Perfigo," but is now called "Clean Access") was purchased and installed to help Network Engineering and other units of the SIUC Information Technology (IT) department keep the Residence Hall RezNet running at maximum efficiency for your use during your academic career at SIUC. Our goal is for the academic network to support the maximum number of people with the minimum number of problems. Since even one infected or "cracked" computer can impact the entire campus network, it is imperative that we work toward getting every networked computer to comply with some minimum standards. This may mean that there will be times when you are required to modify your computer operating system (Windows) software and your personal Internet habits to accomodate that purpose and meet the standards.

Making these modifications, or "remediations" is in your best interest, since they are all intended to keep intruders, computer crackers and hackers, viruses, spyware and malware programs, and other disruptive things off your computer and off our network. No viruses or other malware will mean fewer problems for you. Fewer problems for you also means fewer problems for the IT department. We all win, and the network runs more smoothly.

Not meeting the requirements for the remediations needed on your computer will mean that
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THE RezNet until you do comply.
There will be no exceptions to this policy.

Now for some basics. To begin with, remediation automates the process of checking a machine for various conditions (such as antivirus software or operating system updates), and then correcting anything found to be deficient. For example, we could (but obviously do NOT) require that a computer has to have the Notepad program running before it can have access to the network. If this were one of the remediation items, the customer would have to start Notepad before they could log in. Many other conditions can be checked; not all of them will apply to every computer. The remediation list will be modified as time goes on to meet changing conditions and threats on the internet.

Limitations:
The CA system can check for something to be wrong (such as not having Automatic Microsoft Updates turned on), but it CANNOT fix the condition by itself. The program cannot modify your machine for you; you must do the required steps yourself. It is up to you to fix any problems that are found, and you will be denied the use of the network for internet access until you do so. In a few cases you will have to call the IT Computer Support Center help desk (CSC) for support, but the CA program will display instructions on how to fix any conditions that it finds and provide links to required software and updates. Notice the word “brief.” As often as possible we will configure the system to present complete instructions to you, but there are limits to what instructions can be given for any specific condition. If you do not understand the instructions you are given by the CA program, or the instructions do not seem to work for you, call the CSC number (453-5155) for help in solving the problem.
